V spk-i vi. meeting <>f the town board was held on Monday evening. lWnt :— .Mr r,urell (chairman), Crs. bllis, Grace, and Wilkinson. After the minutes of the last meeting wore lead and continued, the esti mate of oxpendiViro for theeiineiit >e.u was discussed and duly considered. Inc chairman at the same time- laid before the meeting an appioxunate return showing the revenue of the board from .ill wnuce« . for the lamo period. The bieakmg up and defective drainage of a poition of Lyon•treet—the principal thoroughfare— which was only constructed last year by the county, caused a good deal of unfavourable comment. As this is a county road, Or Giace was of opinion that the bo.ud would not be justified in spending the ratopajcrs money on it. The council should either keep it in repair or give it up ; as it is tho two bodies clash, the body w Inch claims the street neglects it, while, the other body (the town board) is tho one immediately interested in it. Sovcial members hoped that one of the reforms to bo taken into consideration in Wellington this swion would bo that county councils should h.uc no authoiity within tho town district.. In all cases the county ro.id that passes through a town is the pi mcipal thoroughfare, and therefore it requires more atten tion. It ia quite reasonable to suppose that the councils cannot spend money on tho portion that inns through a town to the exclusion of other portions of the same road. It is therefoie obvious that if the ntreet is to be kept in a thorough state of repair, it should be handed over to the body most interested, and therefore more likely to keep it so. _ . Tho following are the principal streets included in the annual estimate for improvements :—Moule, Herbert, Ly"». J } -» - lance, Carey, To Awamutu road, Church road, Whitmore, Branch, and Walnisly streets. The engineer's (Mr Aimstrong) import and plan of the main drain, about 40 chains, wsie approved of, and the woik is to be commenced as early as possible. This from a sanitary point of view is ii much required undertaking, as it will among other things dry up and clear out the unsightly lagoon .it the junction of Galloway and Moule-streets, as well as carry off the storm water and draimge from the northern end of the town. Steps vvero also decided on in accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act to have the lev els of the streets settled. The engineer was directed to report on this matter. To enable the board to cany out the various works and improvements requited, as well as to pay the annual instalment of £18 of the (T)vernmont loan, the meeting .struck a rate of one shilling in the pound. The Rriilvvny League was warmly approved of by the meeting, the members prc-ent subscribed to the funds of the league, and the clerk was instiucted to obtain signatures t> the petition and further sub-icuptions. On the motion of Ci. (iiace seconded by Ci. Ellis, the churman was authorised to sijjn the petition to Parliament on behalf of the board. Scveial small accounts vvoio passed foi payment.— (Own Coitespondeiit )
