TE AROHA.

[IIIOM OIK OWN COUKh^rONDIINr.] Tk Aroh \, Tuesday. Ti s days have p.i>scd since, the time h\ed tin the .Fune meeting of the licencing C'>m nuttue, and still no business has been done. Day after day the meeting his had to be .adjourned for want of » quorum, much to the annoyance <md inconvenience of the niembei s w ho ha\e been present (Messrs Gibbons and Lipsey), and causing anich giumbling and dissatisfaction among the hotelkecpeis, who have had so frequently to dance attendance upon the committee, only to bo as often informed that no buM ness could be done. These peisons ate, and with good reason, annoyed at the ticatment they am leceiwng, and otheis who desiie to see the functions of the committeo fairly and satisfactorily peifonned, are loud iji their explosions of disapi)io\,il of the course puinued by those nieuibeis who have failed to put in an appearance. It may be that these gentlemen can give satisfactory reasons for their non-attend-ance (and ni the case of one of them such has been dotie), but the others have not seen fit to offer any excuse, and theii neg lectis all the more culpable, as they aie not more than a day's journey distant fioin the place vvheie their presence is so much lequired. They cannot be surprised if they are censured for their conduct. They have undertaken an impoitant public duty which they are bound faithfully to pcrfonn This duty, moreover, was not thiust upon them, but was voluntarily embraced, and a sense of honour should impel them to fulfil the trust reposed in them. The public have a perfect right to expect that they will carry out their self-imposed task m a satisfactory manner, and failing in this they have no reason to complain if negligence on their part brings upon them the censure of those who committed the tmst into their hands. No reply has yet been received to the petition sent to Wellington sometime since re the proposed borough, and as it is doubtful whether all the lequuements of the Municipalities Act can now be met, the matter may have to remain for a tune in abeyance. Uefeicnce has been made to the subject by the Premiei in a note ie ceiyed from him by a gentlem m here, in which Mr Stout say.s he hopes "the nn provements they (viz., the Government) intend to suggest m local government will meet with appioval, and help to oveicome the difficulties of the people of Te Amh i. Some hope is heie held out that the wishes of the gient majority of the inhabitants of these townships to have the full contu»l of matteKs within their own district in then own hands will at last be realised. Ceitam it is that so long as we remain at the metcy of the county council as now constituted theie will be nothing but grumbling and discontent, and the sooner the connection is severed the better. The attitude assumed by certain meunbcis of that body in then dealing with the affaii s of this pait of tlio county will form a subject of di&cussion .it a meeting to be held in the Public Hall heit> on Thursday evening, and as the couisc of action adopted by these nieinbets gives ample loom for cuticisin, the proceedings aie likely to bo of a lively and intciestmg character.
