On the bottom on the reasoned and drj box were placed a quantity of shaving* and timber, and on this Wa« poll rod about a quart of kero-ene, the hick and sides of the shoot al** being liberally drenched with it. Altogether about half a f.illon was used. This was then set fire to and allowed to burn for a little time. The bottles broke at the first attempt, the flames lieing put out a* easily tin one would put out the flame of n candle Wherever the liquid touched H coating of silica was formed on the wood, and no amount of kerosene or heat could set it on hn» after. The hre was allowed to burn on the Ixittom of the box for fully twenty minutes, aftei the grenades weiti hioken, on being raked off, it was seen that wh.-ie ovoi the silica had foimed, the wood was not even rb.irrrd. The trial was a most unqualified success, eveiy one being fully satisfied of the efficacy of the giuuades in putting out incipiant fires.
