At a meeting of the members of the Government Insurance Association Board held this afu moon, it was unanimously n-solved tint the opinion of the policyholdeis l>e obtained as to the desiiability nf establishing locil bomd*, at a meeting of poliey-holdeis to be held on the "27th instant. Policy-holders will be allowed the privilege of voting b} proxy, and an angi rneuts are being made to supply them with the necessary papers. The (Jo\ eminent have decided to increase the si/i of the Exhibition buildnip, and the tender of the contractors who an- putting up the present building, has been accepted, the amount being ne uly £2000. The Tliorndon L censing Committee have granted all renewals, except in two cises, which were adjourned foy fourteen days. The Customs revenue collected in the colony for the last month Mas£lo7,S34, as against £107,3.")G for the corresponding month of last year. The amounts collected at the principal potts last month weie :— Auckland, £21,082 ; Wellington, £'20, 471; Lyttelton and Christohurch, £13,(599; Dunedin, £'29,730. The beer duty last mouth for the colony was £4155 ; for the corresponding month last jeni it was £4219. \Vedncsday. It is probable the Government steamer Hinemoa will leave here on Thursday for Onobunga to bring down tho Northern membecs of Parliament for the opening of the sea&ion.

CRKYMOUTII, Tuesday. The strike amongst the coal miners of the Coal Pit Heath mine ended last evening by the men resolving to go to work tins morning The price agreed upon is 3s Gil per ton, and the men allowed to "cable " for places, or draw lots for the paiticular put of the mine they shall w oik in.
DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The suburban Cavcisham Licensing Committee liavo fiveri on ten o'clock as the hour of closing all hotels.

At the meeting of the lind board, the question of the Benmore run came up again, Mr Hag«ttt submitting au opinion that the boa id had no power to enter into an inquiiy, owing to the run being a Univcisity endowment, and even if they had the power to hold, and they found the land acts were being evaded, they would do nothing by way of forfeiture. Mr Robert Wilson has been appointed the Dunedin delegate to proceed to the South Seas. At the South Dunedin licensing meeting, the committee decided to issue liucnsca~\vith a condition attached that the licensee allow no person in Ins licensed houses on Sunday, other than members of his own family, lodgers, or buna fuh travellers under sections 120, and I.')(j. The police report that a j great deal of diunkencss exists among the women in the district. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Tlie committee of the Art Society appointed to report on the Canterbury exhibits of pictures for tlie New Zealand Industrial Exhibiton met to day, and considered the list of intending exhibitors. As a large majority of tho artists were not mctnbeis of the Art Society, and their exhibits were unknown to the committee, it was decided that- no recommendations could be made to the Government iv the matter. Tho total strength of tlie volunteers in Canterbury, including the honorary corps, is 1 1,") I .
