Friday. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerc* resolved to-day to endeavour to obtain combined action to secure a reduction in the charges of cable messages by the New Zealand - Australian line. The Chamber also resolved to send to the South Sea Islands a suitable person to enquite into all matters of commercial interests as affecting this part of New Zealand. DUNEDIN, Friday. At the City Court Sydney Knight wu sentenced to 12 months' hard labour for assaulting a Chinaman. The evidence disclosed a shocking state of immorality, prisoner obliging his wife to live with the Chinaman He is well connected in England, and is understood to be a remittance man. His children appeared in Court yesterday charged with theft. HAW ERA, Friday. The only particulars re the Opunake fire, by which Proseer'a Hotel wai destroyed, as yet to hand, are that the fire commenced about 3 o'clock, at the west end ot the building. Some shavings in DuttiU's turnituie shop, on the opposite coiuer, caught tiie, but it was fortunately discoveicd iv time, otherwise there is no doubt the buildings between Duffill's and Crow ther's would have gone. The caube i» not known. The building was destroyed with exttaordinary lapidity. The fire was fiist noticed at about half-past 3, and by four o'clock the liuilditig wa« totally consumed, thero being a strong wind blowing at the titno. Whether the tire broke out in the billiard-room or the stoic room appears to be a mystery. A quantity of furniture was saved, but nothing of great value.
