poetry. Only a Pretty Face.

'Twas only a pretty face That he met in the pawning crowd, Bat at once, with a start, hi« passionate heart, In fondest devotion bowed ; For a creature, he thought, ho fair Was worthy his love's embrace ; Ani full of content would his hie be spent With the owner of that sweet face. But rose and lily and pearl, With wondrous effect combined, May charm the eye, but oan ne'er supply The place of a vacant mind ; And light in the love that holds Our hearts, if we fail to trace In its perfect lines, the soul that shinea To illumine the human faco. 0 1 the maid was so fair and nweet In her beautiful womanhood, He fancied that she whom he loved must beNoble, and wine, and good ; Worthy to share his throne And to aot a queenly part From day to day, and at home display Her graoes of mind and heart. But, alas, for his 'fondest hoped I For the dream of his golden days 1 And, alas I for his pride ! fur his youthful bride, With her shallow, frivolous;, ways, Boon wrecked his home ; and he found The goddess he thought divine, And had dared to love all others above, Deserved not so pure a shrine. Fond of her lookin^-glaKs, Fond of the vainest show, With no heart to feef for another's weal, Or pity another's woe. Ah, sad is the lot of those Who take to their heurt'u embrace One whom they find has no dt pth of mind And only a pretty face.
