A VALUABLE INVENTION.
CvPTUN CHUILhi (iKORI.E CROS->, of the "Briish slup Aljl'xiH'iie, has solved a ])roblcin which lias been agitating the minds, of sUmmmui is ami shipin istci s since the inaii^'ii.iti.)ii of iron ship building. H" 11 11 invented a nuchine by which the bottom of a vessel cm be cleaned at sea of the giowth of weeds and barnacles which h.vve hitherto resisted the action of \anous chemical compositions invented for their especial destruction, fh rough the courtesy of Captain Cio->s we were enabled to personally inspect the operations of the machine, which he has lately patented in Great Biitiin and America, and to test in a mCHfc critical manner its peculiar qualifi eat on i. Working it aft from the fore castle head to the bieak of the poop, the machine did its work expeditiously and eifectuatly t cleaning the vessel from the water-line to the keel, and sending to the surface grass and weeds in a sufficient quantity to letnmd one of n passage thiougii the Sara^os^a Sea. The brushes, when brought on hoaid, were liter illy alive with small marine animals of the shrimp species, which had been finding a home and sustenance on the vessel's side. The ni^chin- in itself is Mtnple in design, and the theory of its construction and application is discernabl©*b the first glance to au intelligent eye. On the upper and lower bides of a strong wooden frame measuring 3 feet 8 inches by 2\ feet wide, are affixed stiff biushes encased on the outer edges vith steel platea, riveted to the frame in sections, with Kathti hinges, to permit a freedom of pl.iy in rising or sinking. A pair of lateral iron fins, on pivots, controlled on deck, regulate the upward or downward motion of the machine, and the requisite pressuie to the hull is as« sured by a wooden tin tie back, which rises fiom thp forward nonioi of tiie frame at an angle ot 4.3 degiees>. The method of .voikiiii,' is as simple as the conduction. A small sized vvne rope is passed under the foiefoot, having a bull's tye on the side which it is desired to clean. A guy-rope, leading through the bull's-eye, is attached to the scrubber, and logulatea its passage fore and aft. The fins are worweil tiom the de<k by a couple of hands, who. elevate or depress them, at either end as an upward oi down waul motion is desired. Three Inen Can Jlttend to the work and go round the sliip nibide of four houis. The greater the *-peed of the ship, the more effectually the machine does its work, the heavier pressure on the turtle-back naturally prodiciug a closer application of the brushy. Captain Cross is to be congratulated upon his invention. It will piove a boon to the shipping community at Luge. OwneibOt vessels will save by its adophundieds of pounds annually in the matter of dry dock expenses alone, not to speak of Lhe profits on quicker passages. Commanders of vessels, also, will not be slow to recognize its merits, am 1 hail in it a deliverer fiom the vexatious delay of a smait clipper by the hitherto uuavoid able unship of a ton I bottom — Exchange.
