A Rloime.ntal Docj.— A rather inte- • resting case of canine sagacity, says the Wellington Post, has come under our notice, which is worth recording. For a good many months past it has been noticed that a large black retriever dog > ho« religiously attended all the parades ' of the Naval Aitillery Volunteeis. This animal aa a puppy, followed the battery into the surf boats on their return from the I'arihaka campaign, and ban attached himself to the Corps ever since, with the result that he has been much petted by tl.e men. On the visit of the •jJUttery recently to the Nelson encanip- / lt *Vtitnt, he again followed the men on board the Hinemoa, and on arrival at the camp was rigged out in a small Union Jack and seaman's dickey, whereupon he took his place at the head of the battery, and was specially noticed for hu dignified demeanour in the inarch past. For this good conduct lie w as elected a member of the Corps, and entered under the name of "TJo'au»." At the parade on Monday again, he took up his place in the van riVed out in a dickey and caused much amusement to the public by his genera good behaviour. It is the intention ot the batteiy to subscribe for and purchase for him a brass collar engraved with his name and regimental number.
