TE AWAMUTU.
Thk polling for the incrensp or othei vise of liquor licenses vvas held heio on Wednes day. Veiy little inteiest was taken in the matter, only live persons lecording then votes. In fact, although >t was adveitwed, the majoiity of people forget the cucunihtiincos until tho result of the poll was seen at the court-house next day- The following is the result of tho poll .-—lncrease of publicans' license*, for, 2 ; against, 8. Inciease of N.Z. wine licences, foi, 2; against, 'A. Inciease of accommodation license- 1 , foi, ti; against, 'A. lnci*i.i"U of iMittlu licenses, foi, 1 ; iigainst, 2, No uicrcii.se for any <if tin: übove can take place therefoie. A poll for the increase of tho three latter sounds iibstnd when then- have been no such licenses in the di.stiict. The farce of a licensing bench for Mangapiko is still carried <i«t. There is not a single licensed house in tho district, nor ia there likely to bo one, for theie is no township, or ever likely to be one, in the Miingapiko distiict. The yvholo of these licensing benches are a faice, for the business could bo dono very well by tho county council, thus saving a good dual of useleso e\pendituio. The Assessment Court' for tho Te Awamutu Town District was hold on Tlnnsdiiy befoie Mr H. W. Northcroft, judge. A tew appeals vvero hoard, some oi whioh weie sustained, but tho business on the whole vvhh of very littlo interest. Ono of our leading spoitsmen, after leading tho account of Sir Hay's bag, told me that he beat that record hollow. He went out for two days and " bagged ono labbit." Ho had some rare fun, he said, shooting at that rabbit all day on Friday. Bunny got used to it after a while, and seemod to enjoy tho fun. In fact, » very good undeistanding arose between the sportsman and himself, and when night camo each went home. The latter said he tired 20 oait- \ lidgeA, mid had a good time of it. Ho went out to the uutu place next day, and bla/ed away again at tho same labbtt (he hud all his fun without fatiguing himself by walking for it) till evening, who», in an evil moment, he recklessly tned an experiment. He tiled about ton foot to the left (to allow for tho puff off), and knocked poor Uunny over. He is very winy foi it, as lie thought he would have a season's fun with tho Jftbbit. However, he it now open to buy n tamo one. Ono guaranteed to stand fire, so that ho can put it in his back-yard, and sit in his door and havo his sport without leav ing homo. He says he must have the worth of his license anyhow. Toetotulisin apjmars to be making head way among tho natives, but whether that is due to the scarcity of money'ainongst them is an open question. I have not ween one drunk for a long time, and I hope I shall never see another. Ido not think theieis anyone who does not approve of tho li'stne turn placed on the sale of liquor in the Native country, and I would go fiuthei and say that tho sale of intoxicants should be piolnhited entirely, and a heavy penalty indicted on auyono supplying them with any. Apiopos of drunken natives, I vvas told a good story of a Native being "" r *«» in 'atf ho Thames for being drunk. The case was dealt w ith at once, and the debn quent fined. He went out of com t and continued " tho cine of the snake-biti ;" he was "inn in" iigain and fined. When the magistiati gave sentence the Native looked sin pi !-.< d, and haul, " Xosauguinaiy feai, Cocky, no tine me again ; all the samo di link, me make a pay befoie." (Own Correspondent )
