The Ions? hot day ' I" At last has panted its fierce life away. Night's cup is overturned— great waves of co Sweet air come down to fill the silence full. Above the tangled leaves tho purple dark Is set with star^, each one a loving spark Faint sounds deline the stillness — little more The whisperingiof waves down by the shore ; A Cricket's lonely chirp the gra°s among — A tremulous note, a dreaming sparrow's song. The air is full of palpitating things, G eat fire-fly lamps, grey moths with velvet winga ; And though their midst with swiftly flying feet And loving heart ,1 come my love to meet. I thought that I should find you here ; I know It is the spot we both loved long ago. Here still my roses tilt their snevy urns, My lily still its scarlet torches burns, And falling 'gainst the grassy upland slope Come wa^es of perfume, musk and heliotrope. Sweet flowers , you bloom for other eyes than mine, And other fingers train each tendrilled vine, But you are here, and through the midnight air I see the'deeper shadows of your dusky hair ; S:e the dear head on which the night dews rest, Sank down in utter heartbreak on a lonely breast. My darling, listen 1 lam here — through all Tne silenc" 1 I munt come when so your soul made call. Poor aching heart 1 Dear heart, sweet heart, I know H:>-» it ha 3 been with yoH, that you have missed me ho f I know the light of our loved home-life fled, And only darkness stayed, when I was dead. The bitterness of every hour— l know it, dear, But break the troubled dream, for, darling, lam hete I
