In the Police Coint, Michelly was charged with obtaining monpy under false pretences f i om Maik Lo\ell, p istuiii*ter, WaKirongnrnni. The .icci)>pd hid on the 2">th January list borrowed from Mr Lovell a sum of £rl 4s Od, which ho was to repay on the following Wednesday, and pave />» security a hor>e, which he represented as belonging to him, but which was not in reality his property. The evidence adduced, however, wa.s not conxidered by the court to be sufficiently strong to sustain the charge, <md the acciused was therefore acquitted. In the W.uden'H Coint, the Aroha Mining and Prospecting Association applied to be put in possession of the ground formerly known as the Uolden Hill No. 1 claim. An accident, fortunately not of serious nature, befel Mr Warden Kenrick while on his way here from Paeroa on Monday last. Tlip horse he wan riding stumbled and fell, rolling over on him, and cubing some injury to one of his legs. He was able yesterday, however, to walk with a little juiHistance to the court-house, and take his place upon the bench as usual. Professor Rice gave an exhibition of his skill in mind-reading, &c, in the Public Hall here last night. Thu performance was similar to those given m Hamilton and elsewhere, as described in the columns of The VV.ukato Times, and was very auccehsful. The hall was well filled, and, weather permitting, there is likely to bo a still better house to-night, when the professor will again appear. , . . „ - There is now a break in the long spell of fine weather. The wind changed yesterday to the N.K., and towards evening alight showers began to fall. The rain came down steadily dv) ing the night, and there »re no signs yet of its clearing up.
AnotTT 3oo hands are employed at the Mint of Yeddo, Japan. When the men begin work they take off their own clothes and put on others belonging to the Mint. At the end of the day's work they throw off their clothes and rush naked to the end of the yard. Here their back hair is pulled down, they wash their hands they drink water, and then holloa, and lastly, they run to the other end of the yard, clearing two or three hurdles ou their way.
