CHRISTCrTURCH, Thursday. The Hon. W. J. M. Larnach, Minister of Mines, returned heie to-night from his visit to the Malvern and Wilberforce disLri< ts, where he has durini; the past week personally inspected the coal mines and gold-bearing reefs. Hi leaves for Dunedin Uy express to moirovv morning, and hopes to return te Christchurcu in a few days.
INVEIICARGILL, Thursday. The Invercarj;iU Borough Council to night resolved, as a Harbour Bond, to introduce a Bill in the next session of Parliament for powers to borrow £30,001> for harboiir improvements and reclama tion. In the Sapreme Court to-day the civil case, the Bank of Australasia v. Mclutyre, concluded. A verdict was retnrned for the defendant. The claim was one oi €100 on a promissory note signed by tin defendant as om of the committee of the defunct Farmers' Co-operative Society The defence wa<- that the note was signed only on condition that each member oi the committee signed a similar douu incut, whiah two refused to do.
TIMARU, Friday. At the R.M. Court, Frederick Lucas was chaiged with intent to murder his wife at Sandetown od April Bth. The evidence was to the effect that some hours after her convenient accused repeatedly explained that the infant was a b Chinaman, aud seizing a pen knife, after vainly searching for a razor, he stabbed his wife in the neck. She managed to get away, and ran in a fearful state to the houee of a neighbour. The charge was fully sustained. Accused^ was committed for trial, bail being re" fused.
WANGANUI, Friday. Tlie Premier and party are expected dow 11 the Wangauui river to-morrow, and leave for Wellington at once.
BALCLUTHA, Friday. Mr Thomson, M.H.R., last night completed a com se of four addrcses to his constituents on different political subjects. At Clinton the subject was " The Past Session ;" Wairarapa, " Finance ;" Balcluthi. " Local riovernment ;" and at Puerua, "Taxation." He was well leceived, and accorded thauk3 and conti Ueuco at eveiy meeting.
