Wavtov Wich.i.n.\Kss — At Smolensk (writes the St Petersburg correspondent of a contemporary) a strange tiial is 311 st, taking place. Five young men, of good families, ami well-to do as to fortune, are accused of having puiposely set fire to 13 houses, churches, aud other edifices. It has been discovered by tho detective bureau that these young men aie mem bei sof a society of " incendiaries fiom plua-ure, " who bum down houses and ruin families for the sake of the " strong emotions" it gives them. The society i& laiqe, and among its members are women and young girls. They aie animated by no hatred for their victims, nor have they any icason to select one house rather than another for the night's amusement. Some of them appear at the fiie, aud are the most zealous in protending to extinguish it. AH live of the accused in the casr confessed the truth, nnd correspondence has since been found which has laid bare their entire plot. No where is "pyromania" so common as in Russia, wheie it seems almost inborn in the common people ; but this is the first example of an organisation of " nyromaniacs," and some people ar« inclined to see in these men diiguised Nihilists. Nothing, however, hat been discovered to confirm this supposition. The accused are pay, rich " young men about town," and except this mama have never been known to commit any dishonest or emel action.
