Electric Light Spectacles.
Thk introduction of tho electric light has led to somo discussion as to the danger to the eyesight produced by tho brilliant lamps. No doubt the electric light is an object to stare at at present, ixnd Btaring at the lamp 3 is not oonducive to the haalth of tho eye, unless the lights, as ia now the oase wkh all arc and some incandescent lamps, are shaded by ground or opal glass globes. When, however, the light coasea to be a novelty, people will not stare at it any more than they stare at the sun or a gaf-jet. For electric light engineers, however, the case is different, and therefore the coloured spectacles introduced by Dr. W. H. Stone, F.lt S., are likely to be useful. These spectacles have blue glasses in front and red or ' blinkor" glasses at the aide, which can be folded down over the blue ones. The gla q ses are selected and combined by aid of the spectroscope, and thus the proper tints are obtained. Tho incandescent lamp is to be looked at through tho blue glasses, the aro through the blue and red together, because it is tha rod rays which are likely to cause injury to the eye in the incandescent lamp, and the bluo or violet rays in the case of the brighter arc lamp. Theso glasses temper and cut off the dangerous rays in tho two cases. Persona with weak eyes may find suoh glasses useful.
