Donald Ciunholm, grocer, was to-day fined 40s for a bicach of the Sales of Poison Act, by selling "Rough on Rats'' without restriction. Wednesday. The Government is considering the ad- \ inability of cancelling all commissions at piesent held in the militia, and issuing a new list which Mould comprise several fresh names. A number of volunteer corps arc offering their services to the Government, but none will be accepted unless they me willing to give their services fiee of capitation. Of course the (Jo\ei niiicut will provide the arms. The Hon. Mr Ballance, accompanied by Mr Kerrow, Surveyor-General, will probably leave for the South about the middle of next week. They will be absent about three w eeks, and w ill inspect the Crown lands, picking out suitable blocks for special settlement. CHRLSTCHURCH, Tuesday. i Mr S. Vaile, of Auckland, addressed a met ting last night (at which the major presided) on the subject of the refoim of passenger rates on the railway. His scheme was received with evident marks of appioxal, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Vaile on the motion of Mr M \\ . Oieen. One hundred weie present.
