THE SYDNEY GOVERNMENT AND THE SOUDAN. Sydney, March 17.
The New South Wales Parliament whs opened to-day by Lord Loftus. The Governor, in his speech to the members of the Legislature, said they were called together to take the necessary steps to ghe Legislative sanction to the course adopted by the Ministry in com eying to England an ofl'er of assistance in the Soudan. The Government, in making the ofl'er, considered it necessary in the critical state of affairs that help should be immediately a\ailable, as any delay would have had the effect of rendering it useless. Ilia Excel* lency expressed his highest gratification at the course pursued, which had awakened the strongest feelings of loyalty in all the Australian colonies, and had evoked sentiments of admiration and gratitude in the Mother Country. fn the Legislative Assembly Mr Badgery mo\ed the Address-in-Reply to the Governor's speech, and Mr Henry Clarke moved an amendment to the effect that the action of the Government was unconstitutional. He regretted the duty of proposing the amendment had not fallen into kbler handK, but, as Sir John Robertson had expressed his intention to support the Government in the matter, he had been chosen by a munl>er of Opposition members. A division on the motion is not likely to be taken before morning.
