Active preparations are being made both in England and India in view of the Anglo-Russian situation. ; The plans of the military authorities provide for the despatch to Afghanistan, if necessary, of two army corps, numbering each 3fi,000 men, and preparations are being made by the Admiralty for a fleet of transports to convey troops to be sent from England. The latest intelligence from Central A^ia is to the effect Unit Major-General Lum.sdenis now close to Her.it, and "will enter that city if the Russians advance from their present position near Pen j-Deh. Despatches to hand from Persia state that the Shah now favours the action of Russia in regard to Afghanistan. Jn the House of Commons, today Mr Gladstone announced that it had been agreed between England and Russia that no further advance of their troops should be made on either side in Afghanistan ; that the question of delineation of the frontier was under diplomatic treatment ; but that it "would be premature to pronounce an opinion as to the possibility of a solution being arri\ ed at, Ma Gladstones as questioned in Parliament last night regarding the Anglo-Russian situation. He replied that he Mas unable to state anything that would improve the knowledge of the House on the Atfghan question.
