CATHOLIC CONCERT AT HAMILTON.

The concert in aid of the Roman (Jatliolic Church, Hamilton, was hold in the Oddfellows Hall last night, and from a musical point of view it was an undoubted success It ia much to be regretted that the attendance was smaller than the merits of the entertainment deecrved, but tho audience, if not numerically strong, was at least appreciative, and appeared to derive the greatest possible enjoyment from the programme. Without wishing to be invidious it may be said that the sinsring of Miss Staunton, who in a, favourite now with Waikato, as she is with Auckland audiences, was the feature of the evening, Both thin lady's songs were encored, and to the first recall the generously responded. Mi* McCurdio's songs, too, are worthy of separata and special mention, as in her own style this lady also excelled. Her singingof " O ! How Delightful," w.is charming. MUs Trewheellar, whose lieh contralto has often been heard to adutntage was thoroughly successful in "Alan, Those Chimes ' from MariUna, and "It was a Dream." Mr H. W. Moore wan in good voice, and succeeded in winning the sympathy of the audience from the first. Miss Miswm's pianoforte wilos were fully appreciated, and she had to .submit to :i recall for her rendering of "Traviat.i.'' The following wan tho programme of the musical part of the entertaiumuut: -Pianoforte wilo. Miss Mis-en ; wing, "The Did Flag," Mr Trewheellar, Momr, "TheßlindUirl to Her Harp," Mrs McCurdie (encored); song, "Beloved Kye," MrO'Leaiy ; pianoforte solo(lri.shair.s), Miss Mishen;Ming, "I Dreamed a Dream," Mr H. W. Moore; wmg, "Waiting for the King,,' and for encore, " The Last Rose of Summer," Miss Staunton ; wing "Alas! Those Chimes," Miss Trewheollar ; n<wg, "Wait Till the Clouds Roll By," and for encore, " When the Swallows Homeward Fly," Miss Stewart. Part 2.— Hong, "Come BacktoKrin," Miss Madig&n; song, "The Arab's Farewell to hi.s I'avourite Steed," and for an encore, " All the World's a Stage," Mr H. W. Moore ; sonjr, "O ! How Delightful," Mrs McCurdic (encored) ; anng, " Acusbla Machreo," Mr O'Leary ; pianoforte solo, "Traviata,"MiHs|Missen ; »imj(, " It was a Dream," Miss Trewheellar ; song, " Robert<>," Miss Staunton (encored). Miss Chitty pHyed tho whole of tho accompaniments in a style , which U'ft ndthttig to be desirod. The entertainment concluded with n pretty little comedy, entitled " Aunt Mawvell'h Return, ' tho characters being sustained by a number of young lady amateurs, members of tho church. To t-ny that the acting was good but feebly maiks our nonce of the high meiit of tho performance, which was a most spirited one from first to last. We regret that want of space forbid our giving a more extended notice to this part of the programme, but we tuist it is not the last occasion upon which thesu talented young people will give an exhibition of their histrionic powers. In a pleaMint little (peed), Father Fox thanked performers and audience for their kind assistance to the cause of the church, and a a very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem. To night tho concert will in great measure bo repeated at Cambridge, <»nd we can promise our f i iends in that district a treat of an unusual character.

The good boy once remarked that the man who plants a birch tree little knows what he is conferring on posterity . Nothing like stenoamphy has been invented for taking'atatcamen down. Whon the speaker contradicts himself, the shorthand reporter shows him up. That is why careful liars revise their speeches before they go to the printer. • Mr Smith, do you know the character of Mr Jones ?' • Welt, I rather think I do Judge. 1 * Well what do you lay about it? ' Well he ain't so Lad a man, after all.' ' Well Mr Smith, what wo want to know iti, U Mr Jones of a quarrelsome disposition ?' ' Well, Judge, I should say that Tom Jones is very vivid iv verbal exercise, but when it comes to pesoual adjustment, he ain't for the contest.' A d-incc will be held in the Te Rore schoolroom on Friday nit,'ht. Mr bibley's band it) at* tendance. The brethren of Lodges !t and 38, L.0.L., arc summoned to meet at the Victoria Hall, Humilton, at 8 o'clock to-morrow evening. Business important. In another column Mr S. J. 'lbompson, i'amabere, thanks those who assisted to save his store from destruction on Saturday'morning. Mr J. b. Kuckland's isle dates arc advcrtiied in another column.
