For soino time past the (government have been aware that when reductions aie tnade in the force those discharged generally make their way mcr to tlie neighbouring colonies. The Goi eminent now propose to allow the men to t.ikp up small settlements of, nay, 100 acrew, on easy f .euns, under tho deferred payment ny.iteui, Tho settlements me to be on tho Wait Coast and along 1 tlie route of the Not them Main Trunk Kailway, and in each case to he in close contiguity to the public workn. Tho men taking up sections aic to be allowed a certain quantity of rations, for which some alight duty will be expected in return. By this means the Government hope to prevent the men leaving tho colony, and also to havo in tho nativo distiiut* »ettler« who have been thoroughly drilled, and who would be aide to protect thomaelves in cane of any lining of the natives. They also consider the force under theKo conditions could be reduced without affecting its usefulness. The regulations for this xchemo will be g.i/etteil bluntly. Mr Ballanco hopes before long to extend the HyxtPin to a civil force.
