TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Th Anon \, Monday. The fmtnurhtly witting of the II.M. Couit was held heie yestmday. The business wa-> light, and none ot the piomuduigs wt'in of much interest. Judgment for plaintiffs w\w given in the following cases. Wells and Souter v. Joseph Read. £1.") Os (id, costs, £2 4s ; Wells aad Sotiter v. Henry (Joulon, £<> 18k Bd, c i ,t>, L'l Os (id ; Thomas Kobinwm v. The in.igi-.ti ate, in lemaiking upon tho case said, that as this wat, the iiiot charge of the kind that had been In ought befoio him, he would inflict only the nominal penalty of Is w ithout costs, but he wished it to be understood that similar cases would m future be more severely dealt w ith. The application of the directors of the Colonist Gold Mining Company for the protection of their claim was heard by the Warden, yesterday. Protection was asked for on the grounds that the company in at piesent in debt, that the dhectors do nit think it expedient to continue working the mine on the meie c'lance of getting Hiilncient gold to pay for labour, &c : that a call has been made, and until it is collected (which will piobably be in not liM4 than three months the period for which protection is lequired) there would be no funds in hand to meet th© cost of working. The application was objected to by the deputation appointed for the purpose at the public meeting held ten days ago, but the reason* submitted by the director* were considered by the Wai den to be good, and lie granted the required protection, being of opinion that thin 'journe would best further the interest of the district. Time will tell whether it will prove advantageous to the field, but the pi evalent feeling at pre«ent is opposed to this conclusion. A circular has been received from the Secretary for Education at Wellington, intimating th it a sum of i'lo 7s 3d has been allotted to our Public Library out of the < Government grant in aid of these institutions. Tins sum w considerably less than was expected, but it will, neveithe-le-H, prove a very welcome addition to the library funds, and will enable the managing committee to provide fresh attractions for the reading poition of the community. Holdeis of residence sites in the neighbouring townships of Waior.m?omai have long had a grievance in the high rental they have had to pay for their allotments. The long delayed return ciickct match between the local players and Cambiidge club was expected to come off on Saturday nett, but an intimation has been received fiom the latter that they have a prior engagement on then hands for that day. Tho pending match will therefore not take place till the Saturday following, when the Aroha men will proceed (weather permitting) to Cambridge, there to try conclusions with their foiTnpr opponents. An assault case, in which a well-known aettler at Waitoa will apiwar as complainant, and an employe of an agricultural •"company in the name neighbourhood as defendant is likely to come on for hearing at the next sitting of the R.M. Court. In consequence of the nuinlwr of bush fires that have recently occurred, the Warden have caused a public notification to be m.ide, that any persona who may be discovered setting hro to timber, scrub, or few within the boundaries of the To Aroha Goldfield will be pioHecuted. There is now a break in the fine weather that has prevailed for weeks past. Yesterday theie weie oociisuni.il slight showers, and to-d»y the nun is coming down with a ■teadiness that will gladden the hearts of many of our farmers.
