LICENSING MATTERS AT CAMBRIDGE.

TO TIIK HJITOH. Siu,— The election for licencing commissioner fur the town district of Cambridge appears to have resulted as satisfactorily as cmild have been expected. E\en had the two so-called temperance candidates succeeded in securing seats, the result would have been equally satisfactoiy. In fact, any fivo out of the same candidates nominated would, I believe, have give equal satisfaction with those elected. I take it that the question at issue in Cambridge is not whether there shall or shall not bo an increase of licensed houses, but more pa rticularly how those houses already licensed shall be conducted. Aie the font houses at present in existence conducted as such establishments ought to be conducted in the interests of those who use them and tlia general public ? Have they all got the accommodation, not only required by the act, but to make them suitable and comfortable retreats for the travelling public, an well as di inking shops and gambling dens? Are the laws of cleanliuess scrupulously observed, and are Military requirements amply and suitably piovided for? Now, ns an occasional visitor to all of the four houses referred to, I would like to impress upon the new licensing bench the facr that these questions cannot all be answered satisfactorily. I shall not particularise any one hons,e as affording some particular cause of complaint, for I believe they are all tnoie or less deficient ia some respect. As to sufficiency tad quality of accommodation, this is a matter to which I'd like to draw the attention of the bench. I think they will find that in Bomp places there is room for suggestion. As to sanitary requirement!", tne Nune might bj naid. Of course, every publican s i', a lius house is the house par excellence ; but, notwithstanding, I can assure the b Mich that the sanitary accommodation of * >ino of thorn i-i very far fiom uvcellent I t»u<t that t'ic<c mattTs will receive the iitt • i;i mof thj b^ncli, and that they « ill diulmgj th'jir dutiei as men invested with si.ci nn office are spotted to. Trusting I have nut tio»pi«.sed,— l am, &c , Ami,
