Jokkm ok the Period.— ln the "Meinouals of Jekyl," now in the press, there is an illustration of his wit much needed for the information of this generation. A Mr Banks, a terrible bore, wrote a history of Rome, which somebody in .Tekyl's presence said waa very bad. "Yet his Rome," said the wit, "is better than his company.' It is necessary to explain that in Jekyl's time Rome waa pronounced lloom. Henry Byron's repartee on the same lines is better than this. Byron was at one time acting at Drnry Lane whilst Chatterton waa manager, the company being an exceedingly poor one.
