ll > Ki.'sii>i:\r: W. Tavloi, Esq. Vice Pie-'i-di'iit: Il'.I 1 '. A. Whit.iki'i, E-ttj. Stewards: Mr W. Taylor, Mi J<\ A. Whitakei, Mi G. J. Storey, Mr W. B«md, Mt d. Wilkmstm, MrJ. Pollaid, Mr J. W. Ellis, Mr J. H. Scott, Mr J. 15. T»».wd«li\ Starter :Mi W. Bond. Handicappcr : Mr W. Peicival. Cloik of Scales: Mr Stiohbury. Hon. Secretaiy :Mr R. W. Roche. These races, in respect of which so much w.is anticipated, came off on the club's course on Mr Taylors piopejty, Te Awamutu, on Thmsday. Though the pro gramme and the general an alignments of the steward-* affoided every pionuse of a good day's .sport, still, as rtii all such occasions, it was left to the weathei to either make or mar the success of the reunion. Unfortunately it choso the latter, and though the morning broke nice and fine, rain fell heavily about twelve o'clock, and continued almost without cessation throughout the day. A special train leaving Mercer early in the morning, taking holiday-seekers fiom Huntly, Ngaruaw.ihia and Hamilton, was well |>ationiscd, but on arriving at their destination the inclemency of the weather induced a large nuinbi'i to seek shelter in the town, and in tin-, way the attendance on the comae was voiy considerably thinned. Tho "natural' giand stand was pooily patronised, and the few patrons that ascended its summit were nude the subject of a very " natural" treatment. The rain debarred the laches from gracing the proceedings, but the Maoris, represented by both Hexe*, mustered stiongly. Tho Te Awamutu band under Mr Sibley were huddled together under a piece of canvass and blew forth harmony at intervals. Their presence added very much to whatever entertainment the day afforded. Mr Adams had a totalizator on the ground which did a fair bu«ine<w, but beyond this there was very little in the way of betting. The only accident of tho day occurred to the Maori nder of Tangi Tangi in the Maiden Plate. After staiting he lust his balance and tolled off, at the .same time bringing down tho lider of Mistake, who fortunately succeeded in regaining his seat and re-onteriug the contest. Tho Maori l>oy had his shoulder dislocated by the fall. The genet al ai range nwnta of the mooting weie of a \eiy aeditablo character, and tin: fact cannot be denied that the course is undoubtedly one of the prettiest and best in tho colony. As to the racing, the events did not afford tho contests, which wpic expected. Victmy seemed to carry off the piincipal events almost as he liked. The Hurdles fell to Chanticleer, and evidently without much effort, though the other hoi ses weie much fancied. The Maiden Plate was the held of the day, there being no few ci than nine fltaitots. Colonist and (Jrasshopper made the 1 unning, but the latte' kept a H.ife command throughout. The Cup affoided a good contest between Rewi und Victoiy, but the distance was tn all appeaßinces was in favour of the latter. Wahainu's hor.se, from whom great things were expected (by tho natives), made a noble stiuggle for rear honour* to the great disappointment of hi.s du-.ky patrons. Victory also walked oH with the WaJkato Stakes.and tho Publicans, Pur-)C, winning as he pleased. Appended is a more detailed account of tho days racing :—: — Hvn'dicap Hukim.kh, of 2">sov*.
