WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At the meeting of the Government Insurance Board this afternnon, the Hon. Mr Tole presiding, the question of appointing a Commissioner was deferred till the return, of Sir J. Vogel, and th« consideration of the necessity of »ppointing local board* wai postponed for three month*. The only business of interest to-day was the appointment of ! finance committee and arranging details ! in connection with the working of the association. Wednesday. Several divers at the Lastingham have returned to Wellington. They report that all the cargo lias been recovered that can be done so with profit. GREYMOUTEf, Wednesday. A boy named Charles Becker, between ten and twelre years of age, .was drowned this morning while bathing at Sawyer's Creek. GISBORNE, Wednesday. A destructive fire occurred at Ormond's mill, yesterday morning, by which Mr Ohandos' hotel and two other houses and a number of outbuildings were destroyed. The fire was first seen in the lean-to attached to Bedgood's stables, which soon caught, amd the fire then took hold of the cottage of Mr Gillace, from which it spread to the hotel and Wheelau's bootmaker's shop. Several inmates of the hotel had a narrow escape. The insurances are : —Victoria, £525 ; Union, £400; South British, £o60; Northern, £100. WANGANUI, Wednesday. Messrs M. dc Harven and McKerrow have gone on a trip up the Wanganui river in a steam launch, accompanied by some of the leading citizens. To-morrow evening Mr de Harven will meet the Industrial Association and talk over matters with them. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Twenty weasels and six stoats were sold by auction on behalf of the GoTcrnment yesterday. The former realised £3 each, and the latter £5 5s each. The remainder of the consignment brought by the lonic will be liberated in the back country of Otago and Canterbury.
