WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of the council was held at the chambers Hamilton East, yesterday. Present : Messrs Primrose (chairman), J. R. S. Richardson, J. J Smith, S. S. Graham, F. J. Johnson and S. T. Seddon. The following report of the engineer uas read : Hamilton, January 23rd, 1885. To the Chaiumvs* Waikvto Couxrr Council. Sir,— l ha\e to repoit that m accord.inco with instruction I kid an information against Edwin Wright, of Huntly Pottery for causing an obstruction to tr.ifhc on the ni.iin road 'at Huntly. The case wan dismissed, without cost', as the court ruled that the information disclosed two offences tho words being " by erecting a house with alein to attached. ' And it wah prosed that the erection of the home was commenced more than niv niontliH before the J.»y ing of tho information, which period rendered the K.ud inforimition invalid. Mr Wright promised to make the place nnfe until tho new road ua* laid out, mii no further action w.m tiken in the matter. Ho closing tlie road* at Huntly I produce correapoudence with the Chief Surveyor on the matter, and I forward the amended plan us supplied by him. 1 ha\e fulled in getting the 24 inch pi pea for the cuUert at Huntly, as will be »eea by the correspondence. The gate on Churchill road complained of has been remo\ ed, I undernUnd from Cr. Johnson. I enclose certificate for £3."» for J. and P. McPherson, contractor* at Wairangi, who have nearly completed their work. Re the Narrows Bridge, I have thoroughly inspected it, <md find that ninny of the bolU are very loose, pud most require attention ; they want oiling and tightening. The timber in the structure is in good order and condition, and has stood well, but id beginning to .show sign* of age, and wants painting all over thoroughly. I would recommend thin to be done with two coats of hematite. The hand rmlx also require painting with two coats of white paint. I have an otfer from E. Wilson to ncrew up the bridge for £11. For this h« would supply his own ropes, platform, wrenches, oil, and all labour required, and thoroughly clean the vegetation away from ttie Und «pan« to the bridge, which I consider necessary tor its safety, and will also enable uh to more thoroughly examine tho Rtato of the timbers at the hui fuco of the ground. Tho backing (on tho west Hide of the river more particularly) is rotting, and will soon require replacing, but this will be Been better when the clearing has been done. _ „ t , T. G. Kirikiriroa, January 17th, 188"). Churhchill Punt. — The Av^tant Surveyor (Jpnerul wrote stating th.»t the (ic> vernment proposed to spend a small Mini of money in repaiunr the Chuichill punt, on condition that the council would maintain it afterwards.- -Cr. Johnson .said a new punt was required. But even if a now punt were placed there, he did not think the county ought to take it o\er. In tho course of some discussion it was shown that no assistance could be expected from the Raglan County, and it was decided not to accept the responsibility. Nvnuows Bkiim.k. -The engineer wan instiucted to accept the offer of E. Wilson, and superintend the w oik.— The engineei was not prepared to gne an estimate of the co-t of painting the bridge. It was resohed to call for tenders for the work. Hautapu Pound. — The question of fees in the pound w.is bi ought up. The Cambridge Board had made certain alteiations, which the council was now asked to confirm. Some dihcussion ensued, in the course of which it was stated that the poundkeeper charged at the rate of 2s l)d per day for hoises and cattle. It was agreed to instruct the poundkeeper that the fee should only be charged for the ftrnt day. HujmA R«vu Encroachment.— lt was resohed that the engineer prepare specifications and call for tenders for constructing the new road, near Wrights at Huntly. Accoi N rs— Accounts amounting to ab mt £80 were passed for payment, and the council rose.
