Sckuons iiy Curatks. —The Bishop of Lichfield has issued a circular to the clergy of the diocese, reminding them that a curate in deacon's orders is not licensed to preach. Whenever a deacon is required to preach, lie is to read a sermon from oue or other of the books named in the circular. These sermons may be shortened or iimplitied, if necessary, bnt otherwise they are to be delivered by the curate as homilies sanctioned by the bishop of the diocese. On oue Sunday in the month, however, the curate is to preach a written sermon of Ilia own composition-, and next day the manuscript of it is to be scut to his bishop for examination. The bishop adds that it will depend upon the character of a curate's preaching how soon this restriction is removed ; and, in the meantime, any infringement of the rule thus laid down will more or less- delay ordination to tho priesthood. We do not know what the answers to these questions may be, but we do know one thing. It may be asserted without presumption that Charles Gordon would die a hundred deaths before he would betray what he believed to be his duty and. hia trust.
