THE MANGAHOI DRAINAGE SCHEME.
TO THK KDirOlt. Siu,— I sco by yoiirKrinkihi coi respondent's letter in the Tunes of December '20th, that a scheme has been bumglit befoio the Waipa County Council to chaw the flood water fiotn tho Mangahoi into the Pumu river, by way of .1 drain and creek, the lattei said to mn tlu.uigh Messr-. Mutch111 son, Cuckeihnc, and Ashbys farms. Your con e»pondent evidently wiote about a thing he knew nothing about, as tho creek mentioned will bo found, I think, to use 111 Mi Cockeiline's farm, running fioin tlience through Mobsis Asliby, Ross, my own, and my f.ithei's to the Puin mur Jf the abme scheme were earned out, the damage dono to these properties would soon amount to mhiio thousands of pounds, not to mention tho number of expensive bridges that would bo lectured. None of us owners of property between Mr Cockerlino's and the Pumu ha\e been consulted as to whether we would consent to tho nbovo scheme being carried out 01 not, and I have sufficient authoiity to s,ay that nothing •hurt of buying us all out will ever gam our consent to any such thing. It is a&toni.shing how {■elf-inteiCbt blinds some people to the damage done to their neighbours by any scheme to benefit themselves. I am sorry to take up so much of your valuable space, but I think it only right that the Council should know a little more about tho matter before they are induced by inteiested parties to expend money fiom the public purse on a schtmo that can ne\ er be carried out. Mr Lake is stated by your conospondent to have highly appio\ed of the scheme, but hnd he known a little more about it ho might have had a different opinion — 1 am, &.C., Allkv Hi.m>ers,on. Kihikihi, .Tammy nth, 1884.
