A lartfu number of settlers gathered together in the township to w ltnebb the spoits of tho day coming from all parts of the distiict. From the old Hettler of 80 years, to tho child in it-, mother's ami. The usual boat races did not take place, causing gre.it disappointment. But it is to bo hoped that ne\.t year tho tho committee will provide for their continuance. Miasra Phillips, (Jilmour, Mitchell, and other gentlemen kindly k-*\ o their services in conducting the sportn. The result «f the event* were as follows :—: —
FOOT SPORTS. Maiden Race, 100 yaids, prize 15% five entries. R. Galvan, Ist ; T. Walhs, 2nd ; closely contested. 200 Yakiw Handicap, first prize, 20s ; second, 10s ; seven started. W. Bishop, Ist, Hcratch ; Thos. Wallis, 2nd, 3 yards. Bishop had it Jill his own way, and won with ease. Milk Handic \p, first, 30s ; second, 10^ ; m\ stai ted for thin event, Richard Leddell, 70 yards, Ist ; Joseph Ualvad, scratch, 2nd ; won by about 25 yards, well contented. Tug of Wak (European v. Maous). — Prize 20s. Very amusing, and wou easily by the European. 200 Yards Hurdle (Handicap). — Ist puze, 20d ; 2nd, 10-i. This was the keenest contested nice of the day, the leaping being \ery goud, e\ery man clearing the hurdles. Four started. W. Bishop, scratch, Ist; A. Walli*, 15 yards, 2nd. Won by about 8 inches. 3 Lk(.(,kd-Kack. — Prize, 10s. Five couples started J. Osborne and T. Walhs, Ist. Running Stkp and Jump.— Piize, 10s. Win. Bishop Ist. Novm, Rack.— Prize, 10a. Wete, Ist. Several other events concluded the day's sport*. Much amusement, and no little wonder w.u. caused to the Natives by the clever cychnjj of Mr E, W.ilhs on his bicycle, tha first seen in this district. The graceful manner in which he turned the bhnrp coi nei>, and dating u ay he tan along the edge of the chlT* struck the native mind as hoinethmpr woiuiciful. Unhappily his machine uame to guef through the bad iron in ono part of the machine. A native \cry "icniiblc lemaiked that as the accident happened duimg the performance for their amusement they should s,ub«.cubo a shilling for the mending of the machine. I don t think the gentle hint wns carried out.
