Betwoou two and tbiee thousand people wore present, as gioab interest was taken as to the probable startois nnd the line of action likely to bo taken by hoi&e owners and backers in regard to the staiting horses, or payment of wagers in respect to tho previous days running, A lnoctins of the stewards was held prior to tho woighing out for the race, in order to decide what was to bo done with regard to wagers affected by the pluvious naming in the Steeplechase, and after an hour's consultation it w.is .iKl«cd J)ot to interfere with the race, as this was a poutponod mooting— not iv new one. Tho totalisator paid baok on all tickets which were presented, but it appears that a good number wero wiping, the owners haying destroyed them after the nun>b,ors woio up. It was said that a good thing W43 macjo by persona who picked up tho fiaginentu and \wte& then) tqgetlfor, as each was worth £S, v/l)icl) wero pait} on presentation. Tho following is tho result ;^ Auckland Stkkpleohask Handicap of 300iovh., added to a sweepstake of lOsovs. each. Mr \V. Westwn's Linwood 1 }[r H. W. MiiMvellVi Sunray 2 Mr Q, I- 13nuHb|ec(|ir)bo'ij Julia Ann ... 3 Wideawako, King, AWiS, WWi and New Year also 1 an. The borne* got well off together. Several exchanges took place during the race, but up tho straight a most exciting struggle took pUce. Linwood had gained a little <jn fcjunray as they approached the la«t hurdle,"but £h«h.» n was seen to be hard on his hone. Loud eries 'of '♦ iiunray wins went up, and no it seemed *t tho lawn r'aiU. but Hheohan made another resolute call on 1 his horse, and catching the rider of Sunray napping drew up to his Antagonist, and Fftfrly snitched the race out of tho hie in the last three strides, winning a grand racq by a shoifc neck victory.
