Hamilton Boxing Day Sports. Sydney Square.
These sports, as usual, drew a great number of spectator and competitor liom all "parts of the Waikato, though the heavy lain dining the oat ly p.ut of the day pievetitod many of tboie li\ ing at a distance fiorn attending-. The entries for the chief events were very numerous and the races well contested. Messrs W. A Giaham and T. G. Sandes were the judges, and their decision Rave entire satisfaction. Messrs A, Bach, F. Forrest and G. E. White had the unenviable task of handicapping, and, making due allowance for the giumbling of unsuccessful athletes and their friends, the handicap 1 -, imposed were exceedingly just. Mr C. J. W. Barton was, starter, aud gave full satisfaction. Mr F. Forrest had the general management of the races, and with the assistance of the committee he brought the most successful Hamilton sports to a happy conclusion. The following is a detailed account of the events :— Maiden Race, 150 yds ; prize, £I.— W. Hunt, G. Bleasdale, Taukirv, Hill, C. Martelli, H. Hocken, J. Aitkin, McMillan, H. Martelli. Kight started. Won easily by C. Martelli, with Taukiii a (food second. Boys' Rack, under 1(5. — Prize, 5s and 2s (sd. Ten started. H. Camp soon took the lead, coining in first, J. O'Neill being second. Running, Hop, Step and Jump, prize, 10-5.— -Taukiri, 1). Craig, Clark, Doctor. During the event a sinait shower fell, and made the jumping heavy work. — D. Craig covered 40ft. lin., and Taukiri a few inches less. Hau 1 Mm Handicap, Ist prize, 30s ; 2nd, 15s.— P. Crosby, McSweeney, Nichol, D. Craig, A. MacFarlane, J. McMillan, J. Wright and H. Camp, Won by D. Craig, with MoMillan second. Running High Jump, prize los.--W. Hunt, G. Bleasdale, Andrew, Taukiu, Hone, McNeibh, and A. Forrest entered. The jumping was very good, and much applauded by the onlookers. McNeish won at sft. 3in. 100 Yam)s> Handicap, prize 205.-— T. Floyd, T. Crosby, T. Connolly, T. Pearson, H. Hocken, A. Forrest, H, Mackmnon, W. Hunt, G, Bleasdale, D. Craig, J. MoNeish, W. Davis, J. Aitken, J. Wright, H. Camp, and 11. Martelli enteied. Some twelve started in this race, one of the best of the day. The starting was, considering the handicaps, exceedingly good. T. Floyd and W. Da\i*> came in together, but by agi cement Floyd took the prize. FAsr Bicycle Rack, prize siher medal, or 2 guineas. — W. Yon Stunner, D. Ward, and T. Wallnutt entered, The course was finni tuo Cdinmeifial Hotel to the Hquaie. Mr D. Waid had a long '-tart and kept it the whole distance, winning easily. One Milk H yniuc 1 vp, prizes sih er cup or £5, and 30s.— P. Crosby, McSweeuey, fcj. Nichol, W. Hunt, D. Craig, A. McFailane, and J. McMillan stai ted. After the second round Craig and McMillan got ahead and took first and second places, VuiLi'lSQ WI'PH 'J»HB I'OI.K, piue 20i. — Taukiii, Hone, McNeish, Doctor, T. Pearson, and M. Devitt entered and all came to the post. Jumping started at Oft. The winner, Taukiri, cleared 9ft. 2in. Potato Race, 50yd«, 12 potatoes ; pme, £I.— D. Craig, J. McMillan, W. McMillan, started. The race was ■wqn easily by J, McMi}lan, Th,e other two hrmg-ing in, by mistako, two potatoes at a time. Boys' Race, under 12 ; prize, 5s and 2s fid. — Ten young^teis started, Burt being first and P. Muiray second. HuaniJ? Rice, 440 yds. Six hurdles, prize, 20s.— F. Floyd, T. Connolly, A. Forrest. H. Webber, D. Craig, A. McFarlane, H. Carter, C. Craig, J. McNeish, C. Haywood, J. Aikin, started. There was some difficulty in getting tqgethep those | who entered.. ijiglifc started. D. Craig was first, and A. l<orrest a good second. Blind Race, 10s, Taukiri, Rihia, J. McMillan, Hill, started. Owing to the evceptionalty good light Hill came in far ahead of the others Three Hundred Yards Handicap, 20s and 10s.— T. Connolly, T. Pearson, H. Hqcken, A, Forrest, McK»nnon, W t Ifwnt, I). Craig, A. MfcFarlane, H. Caiter, C. Craig, T. Floyd, W. Davis, J. Aitkin, J. Wright, H. Camp, and H. Martelli, entered. Some fourteen ran. After a careful measurement of the handicaps, several friends assisting, a grand start was made. Conolly who had the longest start kept ahead for half the distance but W. J)avjs wqrked jjw \yay to thp front, at 4 after a innghificient race camo in first. Old Men's Race. Ist prize, keg of beer; 2nd, cheese ; 3rd, round of beef.— J. Wright, Read, and G-. Brown entered. tanco was 100 yds. Brown had 20yd«, Read 15yds, whilst Wright was scratch. Brown was first, followed by Read and Wright. OBsrACLK Race, prize, 20s. — W. Hnnfc, Bleasdale, Ahui'oa, Taukiri, McMillan, Doctor, T. Crosby, and J. Devitt entered, and seven started. Ahutoa was the only one who overcame the obstacles. J. Devitt and J. McMillan each omitted ono obstacle, and claimed second place. They ran the race again, when J. Devitt proved the winner. TitorriNG Rack Handicap, Ist prize, saddle; 2nd, bridle. — Rayson'a Minnip, Pearson's Pie-crust, Hines Frolic, Windsor's Simon, Browning's Flirt, Somers Trooper, Chitty's Yankee, Naylor's Napier. The distance was about three miles. N.ipter 1 Trooper 2 High Jump foh Houses.— A sweepstake was got up on thp ground. C. Le Quesne's Ben and Hocken's tied. Owing to the length of the programme, and the ram which began to fall about 5.30, the committee were compelled to omit several races. The committee had made arrangements with Mr Sibley for a band, but at the last moment they fell through.
