A Baneful Ciuarette —" Too much cannot be. said against cigarette smoking for boys," said a well-known physician when asked his opinion upon the subject, " and we mean to have more to say about it in future. The evil is certainly growing rapidly, and is one that we find hard work in combatting. Boys have every means of smoking without the knowledge of their parents, and often have their full consent. Cigarettes may be obtained by thorn at any little variety btore at two or three for a cent. These aie sine to be made of the vilest tobacco or no tobacco at all. Well recognised brands are not much better, and I have good authority for stating that one brand of cigarettes, which is perhaps more extensively s:noked than any other, is largely manufactured from clippings from block paper soaked in nicotine. The paper wrappings in the best brands are perhaps not injurous, but in others and another featme to the harinf illness."' " What remedy could you suggest ?"' " Let a law be passed prohibiting the sale of tobacco in any form to boys under a certain age. Such a law is in New Jersey, though of course the difficulty comes in its proper enforcement. Parents should keep a shaip eye on then sons. When a boy slinks into the house for his supper, trying to look unconcerned, yet very fishy about the gills, and not eating anything, yon may be sure he has been down the back alley wrestling with his first cigarette. Express a gentle lcgard for his health, take him up stairs and then administer — not the slipper, for the boy may have a shingle in his trowsers— but a good dose of ipecac, one of castor oil, one of the bitter fnubarb, and any other you may fancy may suggest ; then call in your physician and let him shake his head, and if that boy is>n't impressed by the situation you may be sure he is cut out from an alderman." — Boston Globe.
