HAMILTON BOROUGH EXPENDITURE.
TO THE KDirOK. Sir,— lb has been felt for home time that the pressure on the lcvenuc of this little borough h.is been attained to iU. utmost, and now that many of it* buigevses have left and many more me contemplating leaving for Auckland and other places, it is, I think, time that some steps should be taken to reduce the expenses. Now, the sal.u-yofthe cleilc is £lf»r> a-year, besides other peiquisitcs. Could this sum not bo reduced to less, than half ? lam sti onpfly of opinion that tlioro are many competent men in tho borough who would be glad to perform the clerical duties of the office for £75 a-year. The clerk of the Waikato County Council, nhobC duties are much more difficult to pel fomi, only receives £4.~i a-year. Compare thi> with tl(>s, which w e pay our clerk, and compaie the icveniie of the borough with that of the Waipa County Council, and it will be difficult to understand why we ha\c to pay our cleik such a laige salary, when it is well known that the revenue is 'diminishing annually. If some of our worthy councillor would only take the pains to consider the matter and cause it to be discussed, they would leceive the thanks of the bm ge^sp-,. In conclusion, Sir, I would wi«h it to be understood that my only obiect i* for the welfare of the borough and to reduce ;is much as possible the taxation now piessing &o heavily «>u many of the burgesses. lam not certain that the Municipal Coipoiationb Act specifies the salaries of borough clerks, and I am of opinion that if we could get our work done cheaper wo ought to do so, —I am, ice.)
