ROADS AND TRACKS, TE AROHA
— ♦ — - m At a meeting of the Pi.iko County Council ypsteictay, Mr P.ivitt repoited that some necessary repairs had been done to the road between To Aroha and Waiorongomai, and also on the upper pack track. He a^ked pei mission to have s mething done to that portion of the upper pack track where the Diamond Gully creek crosses it, cost to ba about £12. He forwarded a list of track.s pioposod to be formed for the puipose of facilitating .and encouraging inn^pecting operations, with the estimated co^t of each. These weie as follow :—: — No. 1. Widening and impioving the present pack track, fiom the Thermal Spring Reserve. Te Aroha, to the top of the Bald Hill, SO chains, cost : £100. If this woik is done, provisions can be carried by horses to the back country from the stores. No. 2. Make a new track from the Bald Hill, l'Hiud under the south of mount Te Aroha, and above the piesent claims, connecting it with the tiamway at ita tei iuinu>, distance, 270 chains, cost : i! 270, at 20-s per chain. All the tracks should be made at least 4 feet wide on the sidling^, and the bush fallen half a chain wide. No. 3. Make a new track from above Fern Spur road, along the western face of the hills (passing the Buck reef) to tho Bald Hill, distance, 1150 chains, cost : £160. No. 4. Make a new track fiom Waiorong.niioi to upper poition of Stoney Creek, and round the hill to the Eureka claim, distance, 200 chains, cost : £200. Ui'pkk Pack Track.— Widen and improve the present pack track, at Waiorungnmai, coat : £2.")0. Tins is a most necessary work, as the road in its present condition is aJmost impassable, and will of course in winter be quite stopped, I may state thare are about 40 families, beside single men, living along this load, and to whom its condition is^ of the utmost importance, as their d&Mf^ supplies are carried to them by it. Lower Tkack.— -Some culverts and small bi ldges will be required on this road, and if they could be fixed before winter the present fair condition of the road would be maintained. The cost will be £100.' The amount of money expended on this road by Mr P. Ferguson is £423, to be repaid to him (as he informs me) by the council. The whole amounts summarised are aB followi : —No 1. Widening present track, 80 chains, £100 ; No. 2. Making new goldfield 3 track, 270 chains, £270 ; No. 3. Making new goldfields track, 100 chains, £lfio ; No. 4. Making new goldfields track, 200 chains, £200 ; improving upper track, £250 ; improving lower track, £100 ; amount to be paid to Ferguson, £423. Total, £1503. As it is a well-know fact that there is a considerable extent of auriferous country close to the Te Aroha Riding, but in the Thames and Tauranga Counties, I would suggest that the councils of those districts be communicated with, so that a grant from Government could also be obtained to open up itbepiound, by making goldfields tracks, which, if done, would be of great good to the Piako County. — I am, &c, Fkancis Pavitt, Engineer Te Aroha Riding. The council was unanimously of opinion that the work proposed by Mr Pavitt was necessary in the interests of the field. — It was accordingly agreed that application be made, in terms of Mr Pavitt's report, to the Minister for Mines for £1000 under the £2 to £1 system.
