PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

Thk usual monthly meeting of the Piako County Council was held at Cambridge, yesterday. Present : Crs. Cheptnell (in the chair), Gould, Maclean, Smith and Murphy. Thk Lower Track and Mr Fkrg usox. — An application from Mr .Ferguson for nioney promised towards the co&t of widening this track evoked some discussion.— Cr Chepmell said he did not approve of the manner in which the above track had been widened. Earth had been removed where it should not have been touched, and without any possible advantage to traffic. Had he known this was going to be done, he would not have consented to it at all. Even with the impio\ement.-> that had been effected, he doubted very much whether the machinery for the new battery could be brought up the track. — Cr Smith snid MiAdams had stated that the mateiial for the new battery could have been brought up cheaper by the tramway, but thit> was not so. — On the motion of Cr. Gould it was agreed that the original agreement with Mr Ferguson, respecting a refund of the co^t of the lower track, be adheied to. Culverts at Shah"ksbury.— Mr Cox referred to the promise of the council to construct a culvert in the township at " Broadway," The timber was on the ground, and the money had been voted for the work. — It was agreed to instruct Mr Pavitt to have the culverts constructed. Mangawhkko Bridge axd Road.— The engineer, Mr Sandes, reported on this structure. He had made the necessary arrangements for the carrying out of the work, which was now being proceeded with. There was a very bad spot on the road between Mangawhero and Oxford, which wanted draining. The cost of this would be £20, and he recommended that it should be done at once. — On the motion of Cr. Maclean it was agieed to spend the £20 in draining as suggested. Cambridge-Oxford Royd. — The engineer repoi'ted that a number of men were at work on this road filling holes. The most dangerous places were very much improved. He protested against the manner in which the men were borrowing the earth and .stuff. In many places thoy go along, and when opposite a hole in tho road they dig another close at hand, leaving an awkward trap for people passing on horseback. This was perhaps owing to having no barrows. — It was agreed that the attention of the overseer be drawn to the matter. Waihou Bridge. — The engineer reported that one of the approaches was very bad, and likely to become worse at flood time. — It was agreed to have the matter attended to. Moßiimsvnxr, Pound.— A letter was received from Mr W. A. Murray, respecting the erection of a, pound in the Piako district. The writer offered to construct one on reasonable terms at Avondale. — Cr. Chepmell said £30 had been voted by the council for this work some time ago, and he was deputed to get the work carried out. The lowest tender was £70, so the matter was allowed to drop. — Action in the matter was deferred on the swre of cost. Slaughterhouses.— J. Laidlaw, Te Aroha, applied for a transfer of his slaughterhouse license to Thos. Tierney. — Application granted. — The Inspector reported that he had from time to time inspected the various slaughterhouses in the Patetere and Oxford districts, and that they were all in good condition. Special Ratk. — In accordance with advertisement, a special rate of |d in the £ was levied in the Aroha district. — No objection had been taken to the rate-book. Dog Tax.— Cr. Maclean moved'that the dog tax for the ensuing y«ar be fixed as follows : — £1 for greyhounds, 10s for sporting dogs, and 5s for sheep and cattle dogs. Crs. These rates were adopted. - The following collectors were appointed :—: — Mr Bremner, Waitoa ; Mr Pafccoe, Patetere ; Mr Waltham, Taotaoroa ; Mr Pavitt, Te Aroha ; Mr Hopkins, Matamata. — The remuneration was fixed at Is per collar.
