WELLINGTON, Saturday. It is understood that the Government are actively considering the question relating to the improving of the efficiency of the Civil Service, and promoting its economy. A plan is under consideration for making each department audit its revenue under the supervision of a Board of Audit, of which the Auditor-General is to be chairman. The audit of the railway waybills is to be left to the department. Several changes are also intended in the Treasury, in the way of dispensing with unnecessary accounts. The Surveyor-General will shortly visit and report upon all Crown lands as to their suitability for the purpose of association settlements. The probable price of the land under the scheme will not exceed £1 per acre, inclusive of cost ! of survey. Messrs Buckley, Stafford and Fitzherbert will act as solicitors for Sir Julius Yogel in his libel actiou against the Times, and the Attorney-General has also been retained. Mr Rochfort, who is in charge of the surveys of the North Island Main Trunk Railway, hopes to have the fifteen miles southward from Te Awamixtu completed by the middle of January. The schooner Goldan Isle, which was beached at Pailiser Bay some little time ago, has been successfully launched and brought to Wellington. TAUKANGA, Saturday. Dr. Lewis, of Ohinemutu, whose term of Agreement with the Government, as resident doctor to the sanatorium at Rotorua terminates on the 31st December, has given notice of his intention to resign at that date. It is understood that Dr. Lewis purposes remaining in Auckland and practising his profession there. HOKITIKA, Saturday. The works of Humphrey's Gully Company are progressing satisfactorily. The long tunnel of 58 chains has been driven for over 52 chains, leaving the distance now to be driven under 6 chains, with good driving. DUNEDIN, Sunday. Yesterday, the two men, White and Crowley, were brought up ab the Police Court on the Menthorne murder charge, and were remanded till Thursday. The match for the ladies' shield at the Ofcago Rifle Association meeting was won by the Clutha R\fles, who also won the challenge match between companies in which nine teams competed. PettyOfficer Murray, of the Dunedin Naval Artillery, won the prize for the highest aggregate. PORT CHALMERS, Monday. , An accident happened to-day on board the Penguin to William Carlwell. Whilst he was driving the forward winch a piece of waste trot in the cogs, and in trying to get it out his right hand was completely smashed. A man was arrested last night answerng the description of Fitzgerald, who is wanted in connection with the Newthorn murder.
