FIRE. A fire which resulted in the total destruction of a cottage and its ontiro furniture, happened here yesterday morning (Sunday), The building was in the occupation of Mr Alfred Frotnm, a tenant of Mr John Aubin, the owner of the property. Mr Fromm w.vs engaged the whole of Saturday, in packing his furniture and effects for removal to Auckland, leavingjthe premises apparently safe about 9 o'clock in the ovening. No fire had been lighted for sever.il hours previous to his leaving for the residence of his father-in-law. The fire was first observed by Metisra Smith and Ballard at I past 4 on Sunday morning, but the fire although several were quickly on the spot, had such a hold on the building that nothing whatever could be saved. The furniture was insured for 48X00, but Mr Fromm lost considerable above the insurance. Beside the loss of the furniture, Mr Form in had left his purse containing upwards of £28 in notes in tho pocket of nis coat, which he had omitted to take out before leaving. Th« cause of the fire is a complete mystery. DEATH OF MBS HOLDEN. Another mournful event for which general sympathy is expressed and felt here is the death of Mrs Thiw. Holdon, of Rangiaohia, who died on Saturday morning last, and was interred yesterday. There wai a large attendance at the funeral from all parts of the district, the deceased lady, a native, being weljrknown and generally respected. She leaves a large family to lament her loss.— (Own Correspondent.)
