AVELLINUTON, Thursday. Tick following bonuses 011 local industries are gazetted to-night: —Starch : A bonus of £300 will be given on the first 30 tons of good maiketable starch manufactured iv the colony of New Zealand. Printing paper : A bonus of £300 will be given for the production of the first 30 tons of printing paper made by machinery, permanently established, and working in the colony. Silk : A bonus of 50 per cent, on the value realised for the first thousand pounds worth of cocoons of the silk-worms, or silk-worms 1 eggs pi odneed in the colony, to be paid on quantities of not lo&s value than £30 and not more than £10 >, produced by any one person. Iron : A bonus of £1000 will be given for the production in New Zealand of 300 tons ot pig-iron of marketable quality from ore produced in New Zealand. "Wtought-hon : A bonus of £1000 will be given for the production in New Zealand, by direct process, of '200 tons of "iton blooms" of marketable quality, from ore produced in Now Zealand. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Waring Taylor was further charged with the comeision to his own use of two sums of £700 10s e-ich, belonging to the May estate, and was committed for trial. A Gazette notice, re increased charge of postage imposed on Brindisi leters appeats to-night. Friday. It is understood that Sir J. Vogel has instructed his solicitors to proceed against the New Zealand Times for a long seiies of alleged libels which have been published respecting him. The propiietors will be served with a wiit for £10,000 as soon as the declinations cm be put in form. 11. H. H^yman, ahns Lewis, "the hangman" was charged to-day with inciting to mutdcr a Chinainin on the 3rd wist. L'UNEDIN, Thursday. The nun Wliitley, who was so seriously injured by the train at Kensington yesterday, is progressing favouiably. Fi iday. Hanrock the English pedestrian, who anived from Australia a few days ago has at ranged a match with Young Scott. The arrangement is that if Hancock beats Scott in a 24 hours walk, Mr Austin will give him £100 commission. The Keast and McCarthy, Brewing Company, held its third annual meeting to-day, the actual result of the year's operations was profits £3,318, losses £3.10. The los-es wore sustained by depreciation in value of hotel properties. There was a credit balance to profit and loss account from previous years and a reserve fund of £1,000, but it was considered unwise to declare a dividend. The man Fitzgerald, connected with the Methven muidcr case, has not yet been arrested.

INVERCARGILL, Thursday. The first day of the Southland Agricultuial and Pastoral Show was held in very fine weather. There was a very poor attendance of the public. Only cattle, sheep, and implements were judged today. The exhibits in the former classes were not so numerous as last year. The show of implements was very fine. The following are the champion pii/c takers :—Shorthorn bulls, G. Printz ; cow, A. Beaven ; Ayrshire hull, W. Rankin ; cow, D. Warnock ; Merino ram, Rowley and Hamilton ; ewe, E. M. Holmes ; Lincoln ram, J. B. Sntton ; ewe, J. B. Satton ; Leicester ram. McKercher Bros. ; ewe, J. McCrosbie : Romney ram, S. Hodgkinson ; ewe, Hon. M. Holmes. Special prizes : Cup, £10 10s, from the New Zealand M. and A. Company, for the best Shorthorn in the yard, G. Printz ; cup, £7 7s, from M.M. and A. Company, for JO wethers most suitable for freezing, J. W. Hamilton ; cup, £50, from Carswell, Wh'te, and Co., for the largest number of points in long-woolled sheep, J. P. Sutton. At the Supreme Court, the jury in the perjury case, John Meikle, after being locked up all night, were discharged this morning, and a fresh trial is proceeding. Alfred Keehan, head chief of the South Island natives by descent, has died at Kuapuke. Keehan was a young man, and had been ailing for some time. ' Friday. This morning the second jury in Meikle's (charge of perjury) hare intimated their iuability to come to a decision, and were discharged.

WESTPORT, Friday. A difficulty has arisen between the Westport Coal Company and their colliers, which has resulted in the whole of the latter discontinuing work. The merits of the matter are these :—For some time past the company have been paying men for unscreened coal, which the compauy says is not the rnle anywhere else. They have now resolved to pay, for screened,coal only. The men refuse to agree to the alteration, and have, struck work.
