THE LATE MR JAMES SNOW DEN GALVERT.

JMu James Snowden Cal\ birr, the last survivor of the Leichbardt Australian Exploring Expedition, died at his leiidenc near Sydney lately. He was bom on the Borders on the 13th of July, 182.3, but was educated at Manchester and London Having fi lends in New South Wales, he and Ins bi other left England ior that colony in 1840. On board the same ship they made acquaintance and lasting friendship of the celebrated Dr. Lniclihaidt, who there told them the object of his journey was to explore the interior of Austialia. They promised that one or both would join the doctor in the expedition. In the year 1844 the exploring expedition started from Brisbane, Queensland. It consisted of nine persons, inclusive ot two aboriginals. On June 23, 1545, they passed the head of the Gulf of larpuntaiia, on June 2S, thb most He rue of the many fights with the blacks took place. Gilbeit the natuialist of the expedition, was killed. Mr J. S Calveit was dangerously wounded, and though lie recovered the split in his skuil, he carried the mark of it to the day of his death. The party made remarkable discoveiies of mountains and livero and magnificent pastoral country. On December 17, 184.3, after a journey of 0,000 miles extending over 15 months, " lagged and famished, with no stores but a few diied strips of their last bullocks, they reached Port Essmgton." The exploiers had long been regaided as dead, and mournful songs set to music wete sung in their memory in Sydney. They weie received with enthusiasm and jewaided by the State, and the people subscribed i 11 ,400 as a piesent. Poor Leichhaidt started again to cross the centie of the continent in 184 S. and has not since been heard of. Mr Calvert settled near Sydney, was created a magistrate of the temtoiy, and manied a most accomplished lady, Miss Atkinson, the authoress of the popular Australian tales, "Ceitrude, the Emigrant," and 11 Conanda, or the Veteran's (Jrant," she also contributed many new specimens of plants named after her to the " Flora Australiensis " and "Fiaementa Phytogiaphhc." She died in 1872.
