RANGIAOHIA ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of tho board was held on Saturday. Present : Messrs Sloane (chairman), | Wilson, Watters, J. Ramsay, and McKinder. — Correspondence was received from Messrs Kay and Hutchinson, drawing the Attention of the board to the bad and dangerous state of the road between Orakau and Paikuku, and requesting the board to have the necessary repairs executed. It was decided to let the request stand over until it was ascertained what repairs were required.— A few small accounts were passed for payment. The board discussed the advisability of having highway boards done away with, and allowing the county council to do the work of the district. — The chairman expressed himself strongly in favour of having one or other of the governing bodies abolihhed, the highway board for choice. He was of opinion the work could be done better and cheaper by the council. By having an engineer for the county, the whole of the roads, bye-roads as well as main roads, would be well looked after, and each road would receive its proper share of attention. The salary of one engineer would not amount to anything like the total amount paid for engineering by the various road boards, and when an engineer was paid to give his whole time to the county roads, they would be better looked after than if he divided his attention between them and his pi ivate business, In support of his statements the chairman read the following list of expenses of this board for the year : — Office expenses, £14 10s 2d ; election expenses, £4 Is ; engineering, £50; secretary, £30; advertising, £15 Is (sd.— Total, £113 12s Bd, about one third of the rates of the district. Those present, with one exception, after hearing this state ment of expenses, and discussing the matter in all its bearing*, came to the conclusion that it would be better to abolish highway boards in favour of county councils. Some discussion also took place about the furze nuisance. The board appear to bo determined to make people clear the roads on which their properties abut. This concluded thebusine&s. — (Own Correspondent.)
