The Waikato Times. AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

Equal and exact justice to all men, Of \vhatsoo\er state or persuasion, religious or political. Here "shall the Press the People's right maintain, Una wed by influence and unbribed by gain.

SATURDAY, NOV. 29, 1881

The fact that Mr Samuel Vaile has been asked to address so many meetings in Waikato on the subject of railway reform during the coming week is not without some significance. Like all reformers, Mr Vaile has known what it is to suffer neglect and contaniely. When, a short time ago, he offered to address the settlers of this district upon the same subject his proposal was ignored ; but the space of a few weeks has witnessed a great change. That conservatism which clings to old forms and usages, has been, by the mere pressure of circumstances, obliged to give way to more liberal sentiments. A closer inspection of the tariff (to understand it is out of the question) induced by Mr Vailo's persistency, has laid bare some of its anomalies, and the general public have naturally turned to the only man who seems to have effectually grasped the situation. In saying this we must not be understood to commit ourselves to an acceptance of Mr Vaile's scheme in its entirety, though we are quite prepared to accept the principle upon which he professes to proceed. Broadly stated, Mr Vaile's contention is that the settlement of the country is thp primary concern of the Government, and that the question of making the railways pay should be subservient to this. Theie are few who will not readily subscribe to this | doctrine. Thanks co the Tamahere Farmers' Club, an opportunity i is now presented of learning the details of Mr Vaile's plans. For this purpose meetings will be held at Tatnahere on Monday, Hamilton on Tuesday, Cambridge on Thursday, and Te Awamutu and other places on days yet to be fixed. A full and free discussion of the whole question is precisely what Mr Vaile himself desires, and such discussion cannot fail, we think, to be productive of much good. We trust to sec all the meetings largely attended by those whose interests are most affected by the present absurd tariff.
