ALEXANDRA.
The Defence Minister, Mr Ballance, has returned to his old policy, and the Armed Constabulary are being reduced in this district, some fifteen men of the road party having been notified of their dismissal at the end of the month— report says that some of the " non-coms," and officers will next be selected to receive their discharge to carry out the retrenchment policy of the Government. A painful accident happened here to a little girl, the daughter of Mr T. B Walker, on Thuisday List. The child was eating a cake in front of the door, which attracted the attention and appetite of a passing dog, who snatched for a mouthful, biting and tearing the child's under lip. It is to be hoped, the child being young, it will not cause any permanent disfigurement. — (Own correspondent. )
