CHRISTCHUROH, Saturday. A.T twenty minutes past four this afternoon, a fiie occurred in the office of Mi H. S. Austin, solicitor, Hereford-street, whereby a quautity of valuable docu ments were destroyed. No cause can be assigned for the fire, which was quickly extinguished- Mr Austin was uninsured. The building which belongs to Mr T. W Jones, who is absent in Tasmania, was insured for £1000 in the Victoria, bat the damage is alight. Monday. At the inquest to day on the body found in Lyttelton Harbour on Friday last, the body was identified as that o: Thomas McCleark, a labourer, who hail h\ed in Christchurch, and left home ten days ago. His wife could not account for his having gone to Lybfcelton. The following players have been selected to practice for the forthcoming matches with Otago and Auckland :—: — Ashby, D. Barnes, Buchanan, Cotteiill, E. J. Cottenll, W. J. Duulop, Towke, Helmore, Longdon, Milton, Moorhouse, MoMunuy, McDowell, Rayuer, Recretan, Strange, Master and Wilding. George Watson, a well- known i cricketer, died early this morning, aged 29. He had represented Canterbury in all the principal matches for many years past.

ASHBUB-TON, Monday. Two lads, aged 12 and 14, respectively, sons of John Small, a well-known fdnnur in this district, were drowned while bathing yesterday. A fire occurred atTiuwald on Saturday morning, by which an unoccupied house Was totally destroyed. The insurance was £124 in the Victoria Office. Another fire took place at Seafield on Saturday night, by which another unoccupied house was burnt. Insurance : £100 in the I/miion and Lancashire.

OAMARU, Sunday. Mr Jaa. Udall, one of the oldest and most; respected residents of Oamaru, was lost off the steamer Beautiful Star on Friday night. The mate called the captain at two o'clock on the morning, and told him Mv Udall was missing. Just after that, upon going to hand in the log, Mr Udall's hat was found lying on a coil of rope, as though it had been placed there. A search waa then made for Mr Udall, but he could not bo found. At this time the vessel waa between Shag Point and Moeraki. He must have been overboard for sometime previous, and the vessel having gone at full speed all that time, the captain considered that nothing could then be done to save him. Mr Udall was 75 years of age.

WELLINGTON, Monday. Sir John Hall arrived here from New Plymouth on Saturday, and left for Christchurch by the steamer Waihora this afternoon. The Appeal Court resumed at 12 o'clock this morning when argument was heard in two Dunedin cases, Regina v. Plynn, and Regina v. Fowler. In the former the conviction was quashed, and in the latter it was affirmed. Capt. Kennedy, the popular commander of the steamer Hauroto, gives up charge of that vessel to take up the position of ship's husband in Wellington to the Union Steam Shipping Comp*ny'sj fleet. Capt. Kennedy will, it is understood, be succeeded by Capt. Anderson of the Rotorua. Howard Robert Roskill, railway station-master at Normanby, has' been arrested for embezzlement. ' ' f >

DUNEDINT, Sunday. There Was a heavy swell on the bar yesterday, so that nothing conld be done to recover the buckets of the ton? dredge. There are 35 bucket*, and, the total weight is about 30 tons. Rivera will get the connection chain, and it is intended to raise a bucket or two at a.time, there being the necessary machinery on board the dredge. Fortunately they are somewhat out of the direct line of vessels crossing the bar. The dredge, including repairs since arrival. &c, has cost about £60,000.

DUNEDItf, Monday. The Attorney-General of New South Wales has declined to file a bill against McKay, JDodson, and Pritchard, in the conspiracy case. His Kxcellency the Governor will be piesent at the Dunedin Show. A very narrow escape from a boating fatality occurred in the harbour within a mile or so of the city on Saturday evening. Drs. MacDonald, and Colquhoun, and Mr H. Pulton, were out sailing and the boom of the sail knocked Dr. MacDouald over board. Happily he can swim, aud the boat being got round, a rape was thrown to him, but she was going so fast the rope dragged him under wawr, ami he had to let go. Dr. I Oolquhoun then jumped over with a rope, ! but MacDonald having been 15 minutes in the water was just succumbing when a rope sent from the shore reached him, and he was saved when almost at his l«st gasp. Dr. Colquhoun was subsequently pulled into the boat safely.
