RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, HAMILTON.
Tuesday.— [Uefoie MrH. W. Northcroft, R.M.] Stealing a Dog. J vmks Nolan, described as a groom, was charged on remand with stealing a cattle dog, the property of Mr R. Kirkwood, of Cambridge. Seigeant McGovern prosecuted, and the accused, who was undefended, pleaded not deposed that Nolan left Cambridge on the 14th, and when he had gone witness missed the dog, produced, which lie valued at 40s. He gave no authority to prisoner to take the dog away. Win Naylor, a general dealer, residing at Hamilton, deposed that one day last week at Cambridge, the prisoner offered to sell the dog to him. S.iw him at Hamilton on Friday and he again wanted to sell the dog. Ceitainly thought the dog belonged to prisoner. Mr Hope, barman at the Commercial Hotel, gave similar evidence. Accused did not say the dog bad followed him to Hamilton, and witness fully believed it to be his own property. Constable Murray deposed to having arrested the prisoner at Taupiri on Saturday. Nolan said the dog had followed him from Cambridge and he could not get lid of him. In answer to the bench prisoner repeated the statement he had made to the constable. The court considered the charge proved and sentenced the prisoner to one month's imprisonment with hard labour in Mount Eden Goal. Alleged Larceny by a Native.
