ALEXANDRA.

At a preliminary meeting held at the Alexandra Hotel, on Saturday evening last, it was determined that the usual holiday sports should be held here on Boxing Day. The road party of the Armed Constabulary engaged in forming the Kawhia Road, under the commana of Captain Capel, are making good progress, having now upwards of five miles of heavy work done. There is> some heavy blasting woik being done, removing blocks from the face of one of the spurs, and the men are novs working towards Alexandra, some half-castes and natives having been taken on the work of clearing the bush section towards Kawhia. The camp is in excellent order, and the men well housed, which must have been much needed during the winter. The camp have a good baud of music among them, which I hear is secoud to none in the Waikato. An amusing foot race took place at the camp Okoko on Satiuday last for £5 a-side, distance half a mile. The competitors were Messrs F. Loneigan and A. Pottersou. Both had their admirers, and considerable interest was taken in the match. Louergan, who had been leading, fell down some little distance from the winning post, and appeared in no hurry toriseagain. Being encouraged, however, to go on, lie did so, winning by some ten yards. Both were completely ! pumped out. Native news is scarce. The meetings at Whatiwhatihoe are over. Discussing the merits of the Blue Ribbon movement was the principal subject. All appeared to think it would be most beneficial for them to adopt it. Whether they will do so, however, aud keep to it is, I think, particularly doubtful in many cases. Tawhiao is now absent at Karakariki. He left with some fifty followers on horseback yesterday, to attend the tangi over the deceased chief Wiromu Pateue J (William Barton), the well known Wes- j leyan native minister. Archdeacon Clarke has been a visitor during the week at Whatiwhatihoe. — (Own Correspondent.)
