STREET MENDING IN THE BOROUGH.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — This morning, seeing that two men were engaged in throwing grass sods on to the middle of the already good roadway in Collingwood-stieet, I waited on his Worship the Mayor to protest against this being done, and the road spoiled. I told him that such a thing was utterly wrone, and against all engineering principles. His answer was, '' \Ve don't go on engineering principles." I said "It is against common sense." He replied, 11 We don't go on common sense." Councillor Johnson and Mr James Martin were present, and heard the whole conversation. Now, sir, Ido object to one of the best roads in the town being utterly spoiled and money wasted, as well as travellers incommoded, by having the roadway filled with large grass sods to the imminent risk of life and limb when ravelling after dark, —I am, &c , T. G. Sanues. Hamilton, 12th November, 1884.
