GENERAL GORDON'S DEFEAT DENIED. [REUTERS TELEGRAM S.] Londo n November 3.
In its issue to clay the Daily News publishes a telegram from itt> coi respondent in the Soudan, stating that a tenible battle has taken place .between General Goidon's forces and the followets of the Mahdi. The latter mini bered over 20,000 men, and fought despetately for eight hours, sutteiiiig enormous losses and temporary reveises, but continually returning to the field in increased numbers. Messages to the Press Association, dated London, 2nd and 3id, state that General Gordon had been taken prisoner in an attempt to escape from Khai tcnim by the liver. The same authority also stated that the Khedive had telegraphed to the Queen news of Gordon's oaptine.
