THE FURZE NUISANCE.

In accordance with a resolution passed at the October meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, the Town Clerk wrote to the members for the district, pointing out the difficulties which lay in the way of enforcing the provisions of the Public Works Act relating to the eradication of furze. It was pointed out that under the law as it at pieseut stands, it is almost impossible to obtain a conviction. It was further shown that while the Crown lands and rcaeives of the colony were not under the operation of the Act it was unfair that private individuals should be compelled to clear the furze, year by year, while the nuisance still continued spreading from the said Crown lands. It was suggested that a sum of money should be placed on the Estimates to clear the public estate of furze, in which ca»e local bodies could meet the difficulty with some prospect of success. At last night's meeting of the council the following letter was received from Mr J. B. Whyte :- Wellington, October 23rd, 188*. To the Town Clerk, Hamilton. Diar Sir,—l duly received your letter re corse, and have clauses inserted in the Public Work* Act Amendment Hill which I think will have the effect desired by your council, making the cost and damage recoverable in the same manner as rates. 'I he bill has passed the Lower House, and when it passes its third reading in the Legislative Council I will send you a copy. —Y
