LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Major Atkinson's Brother Drowned. Apoklvnd, Friday Night. Mr Dkcimps Atkinson, brother of the ex-Premier, was drowned at Pahi yesteri day. The body has not yet been recovered. There were six people in the boat, including one girl, when she upset. All were saved except Mr Atkinson, who went down within two yards of the boat and was not afterwards seen. Mr Atkinson was for many years a resident of Taranaki. Several years ago he came to Auckland and engaged in the manufacture of Portland cement at Whangarei. The industry proved unprofitable, and Mr Atkinson turned his attention to other things. He went on a visit to Kaipara in company with Mr Metcalfe to see the country.
Tawhiao in Auckland. Tawhiao received a commission from England from the Good Templar Right Worthy Grand Lodge of the World, authorising " Our worthy brother King Tawhiao to act as honorary Deputy Right Worthy Grand Templar." His duties are to organise and institute lodges among the Maoris, reporting from time to time to the Right Worthy Grand Templar.
The Unemployed. A deputation of the unemployed waited on the Mayor and presented him with a j* petition bearing 21 signatures, asking-^ him to call a public 'meeting. The Mayor replied that he could not do so upon so small a representation. If 100 signatures were obtained his answer might be different.
Strike of Steamer Hands. ™ A general strike has taken place amon g the engineers, firemen and seamen on the coasting steamers, and several coasting vessels have been prevented from making their usual trips in consequence.
Sharemarket. The sharemarket was brisk to-day, especially in the morning. Several sales of Darwins at ss, receding to 4a 4d ; Imperials, 19s 6d ; Cambrias, 4s 4d; Deep Level, Is 4d to Is 7d.
