Jones. — Mr (Tie-sham for i)laintitf. Adjoin tied at solicitor's request till ne\t court day. Rangiaohia Highway Boa id v. G. A. Laidlaw.— Rates. Mi Gresham for j>laintiff. The amount was paid, less solicitors fee. As the summons had not been ietinned fiom Te Aroha, the court adjourned the case. Cotkin vDrury, money lent, £4 12s. Mr Gresham for plaintiff. Plaintiff deposed that he was in charge of Motuihi island, when defendant's wife, (who is plaintiff's motliei-in-law), came to the island and asked him for the loan of £2. Plaintiff had no money at the tune but said when he arrived in Auckland he would lend her the amount. Meantime Mrs Drury went to Auckland and .saw Mr Biophy, the immigration officer, and told him that she came at the request of plaintiff for the sum of £2 125, which she received fiom Mr Brophy. The amount was deducted from plaintiff's pay by Mr Brophy. There was also another item of £2 subsequently lent to defendent'b wife while in Cauibi ldge. Letters, some of which were not signed, from defendant's wife to plaintiff admitting the liability, were put in evidence. Annie Louisa Corkin, wife of plaintiff, gave corroborative evidence. The defendant who resides at Vitzroy, New Plymouth, gave his, e\ idence there, which was forwarded to this court. Defendant denied ever having asked plaintiff for any money for himself or wife. The evidence of defendant's &on was also taken at New Plymouth. He deposed that plaintiff desiied hib wife to go home to her father's (Drury) place to be confined and that he would pay expenses, which he failed to do. — Mrs Di my, wife of defendant, whose evidence was also taken at New Plymouth, deposed that it was owing to plaintiff's wife's weak state that witness had to come up to Auckland with her, and that it was at her daughter's request she came up again to Cambridge, as she (her daughter) complained of her husband's 111traafcment, and that in consequence she was put to great expense. The witness deposed that plaintiff told his wife to e 'ive her mother £2 to pay her expenses.— The Court adjourned for a few minutes, and gave judgment for plaintiff for full amount and costs, £2 6s (id. Gresham v. Lewis. — Judgment. The Court gave judgment in this case for plaintiff'for £9 76 Id, and costs £2 15s, but were of opinion that the case should- have been brought before the R.M. Court instead of 'being taken to the Supreme Court.
