CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.
The barque U. J. Libby arrived from Boston to-day, 108 days out. She is commanded by Captain Richardson, who was badly stabbed by one of the crew during the voyage. The following is the captain's account of the fray :—" On October 1, hearing a fight on the quarterdack, I ran on deck, and found the mate and Patrick McCai thy struggling together. I immediately separated them. McCarthy ran towards me, swearing that he would kill the mate. Went to my cabin to put on shoes, and went fotward to try and quiet the man. I found McCai thy in the forecastle with a knife in his hand, and ordeied him on deck. He replied : 'If you want me, come in after me ' I told the second mote to take him out, I following myself. Immediately on this McCarthy made a rush at me, and stabbed me on the left side above the hip, the knife running down tow aids the groin. I drew the knife out; had him put in irons in the lazarette, MoCat thy still swearing that if he got loose he would do for both the mate and myself. Fearing he might succeed in breaking loose, I had him chained down with his hands behind him." This statement of the affair is signed in the log book by the officers and all the crew excepting McCaithy. The captain is in a fair way towards recovery. McCarthy was biought ashore and lodged in the lock-up, to be brought before the R.M. on Monday.
